For insight into how important economic issues are to the presidential campaign, take a look at the top-shelf advisers Mitt Romney has assembled.

David Whitford writes in Fortune that members of Romney’s Economic Policy Steering Group met secretly last month at campaign headquarters in Boston.

Participants (some of whom phoned in) included five former chairmen of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, George W. Bush’s top economic policy adviser, former World Bank President Robert Zoellick and John Thain, chairman and CEO of CIT group and former head of Merrill Lynch.

None would confirm on the record for Whitford that they had attended. The campaign has not yet announced the steering group.
