As thousands of late comers watch their Facebook investments plummet, Peter Thiel has pulled more than $1 billion out of the company this year.

Last week, he sold more than 22,000 shares for a total of $396 million.

According to an SEC filing Monday, he still holds nearly 5.6 million shares, valued at more than $100 million at the market’s close Monday.

Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal, has more than doubled his money. He was one of Facebook’s earliest backers, putting $500,000 into the company as a startup in 2004.

His other investments have included Zynga and LinkedIn.

Ranked No. 854 on the Forbes list of world billionaires, Thiel has also invested relatively large sums in the political scene. He has made $3.7 million in so-called “soft money” non-campaign contributions this election cycle.

Beneficiaries include Endorse Liberty, the super PAC supporting Ron Paul; and the conservative advocacy group Club for Growth.
