Obama super PAC taps Democratic firmament

By Laurie Bennett

Priorities USA Action is a relatively new political vehicle with a long Democratic tradition.

As a super PAC, it is supposed to keep its distance from the Obama campaign, which it supports. Yet it’s stacked with party loyalists.

Two stand out for the strong Democratic bonds forged by their families.

Bill Burton, a co-founder of the group and a veteran of presidential and congressional campaigns, was deputy press secretary for the Obama White House.

His wife, Laura Capps, is a former speech writer for President Bill Clinton and communications director for the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Her mother, Lois Capps, is a Democratic congresswoman from California. She was first elected to the House in 1997, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, Walter Capps.

Ickes is another well-known surname associated with the super PAC.

Harold M. Ickes, former deputy chief of staff to Bill Clinton and a strategist for the 2008 Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign, is president.

His father, Harold L. Ickes, was Interior secretary during the administrations of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman.
