Funding gay causes and Democrats

By Laurie Bennett

Jon Stryker is one of the few billionaires contributing this year to Democratic super PACs.

In June, he gave $750,000 to the PAC called Priorities USA Action, after previously sending money to the Obama Victory Fund and other Democratic committees.

Although Stryker didn’t wait for Obama’s endorsement of same sex marriage before supporting the president’s re-election bid, it certainly didn’t hurt.

Stryker is the founder of Arcus Foundation, which funds gay rights efforts.

“I’m probably one of the wealthier gay men in this country, and I felt I had a big responsibility,” he told the
Chronicle of Philanthropy
in 2008.

Much of Stryker’s earlier political spending was directed to his home state of Michigan, where he launched a PAC called the Michigan Coalition for Progress.

An architect, Stryker inherited his wealth from his grandfather’s having founded Stryker Corp., a medical supply company.

His sisters are also on the Forbes billionaire list.

No federal campaign contributions have yet been reported for Ronda Stryker this election cycle. Pat Stryker, an Obama supporter, has contributed $138,100.
