The realpolitik of ‘The Campaign’

By Laurie Bennett

July 30, 2012 at 5:56am

Will Ferrell’s latest movie, “The Campaign,” is billed as bipartisan satire, but that doesn’t mean it lacks political connections.

Co-star Zach Galifianakis is the nephew of a congressman. Nick Galifianakis represented North Carolina as a Democrat for three terms. His Washington career ended in 1972, when he ran unsuccessfully against Republican Jesse Helms for the U.S. Senate.

Director Jay Roach also headed up two recent political documentaries - “Recount,” about the tense days following the 2000 presidential election, and “Game Change,” an HBO drama about Sarah Palin.

The personal politics of “The Campaign” cast and crew reflect the overall liberal leanings of Hollywood.

Will Ferrell is a big backer of Obama this year, giving nearly $72,000 to the campaign. He also has contributed almost $62,000 to the Democratic National Committee.

Roach contributed to Barack Obama in 2008, as did cast member John Lithgow.

However, Dan Akroyd, who also has a role in the movie, gave to John McCain.
