McCain calls for end to allegations against Clinton aide

Sen. John McCain stepped up Wednesday to defend an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Accusations by House Republicans against senior adviser Huma Abedin, he said, are “an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant.”

Rep. Michele Bachmann and four other Republicans have asked inspectors general at the departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security to investigate possible connections between the federal government and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Bachmann named Abedin family members as having direct links to the organization, pointing out that Abedin is a “close confidante” of Clinton.

Abedin is not only a longtime aide to Clinton; she is also the wife of former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned last year after sending lewd photos to women over the internet.

McCain said Wednesday: “These sinister accusations rest solely on a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations of members of Huma’s family, none of which have been shown to harm or threaten the United States in any way. These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis and no merit. And they need to stop now.”
