The expanding network of Citizens United

Citizens United characterizes its lawsuit against the Federal Elections Commission as “David vs. Goliath.”

The organization is one of the few to describe the powers of the comatose election panel as colossal.

The full impact of the Supreme Court’s decision, lifting restrictions on politional contributions by companies and unions, indirectly fostering a growing trend of anonymous donations, won’t be measured until long after the 2012 presidential election.

The reach of the major players in that decision, including attorneys Ted Olson and James Bopp, and group founder Floyd Brown, continues to grow.

Olson’s impact on the political landscape can’t be overstated. He was lead counsel for Citizens United when it reached the Supreme Court. He also successfuly argued Bush v. Gore.

Bopp, general counsel to conservative groups such as Focus on the Family and the National Right to Life Committee, represented Citizens United in the early stages of the court battle.

Brown, founder of Citizens United, is best known as the creator of the Willie Horton ads during the Bush-Dukakis presidential election.

The ad was produced by Larry McCarthy, who more recently co-founded Restore Our Future, the major super PAC supporting Mitt Romney’s campaign.
