Mapping the conservative-Republican super PAC web

Time to round up the usual suspects.

When we queried the Muckety database for contributors to the biggest Republican and conservative super PACs, we came up with some familiar names.

We drew the Muckety map above by searching for crossovers among these outside groups, which have supported Republicans and opposed Democrats:

Restore Our Future - supporting the Mitt Romney campaign
    Club for Growth Action
    American Crossroads
    Texas Conservatives Fund
    FreedomWorks for America
    Conservative Renewal

(We did not include candidate super PACs supporting candidates who are not the presumptive Republican nominee.)

The map shows major contributors to two or more of the selected super PACs. Six of them are billionaires:

Sam Zell
Sam Zell

(Newspaper employees, current and former, might understandably question a system that allows Zell to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to political campaigns while one of his major investments, Tribune Company, works its way through bankruptcy. The Chicago Tribune reports today that a U.S. bankruptcy judge is expected to confirm a restructuring plan this week.)

Although Texas homebuilder Bob Perry isn’t a billionaire, he contributes as if he were one. Perry has given to American Crossroads, Restore Our Future and Texas Conservatives Fund.
