Chicago billionaire pours millions into GOP efforts

In 2008, Chicago billionaire Kenneth Griffin hedged his bets, raising money for both John McCain and Barack Obama.

This time, at least thus far, he’s putting his money on the Republicans.

Griffin, who made his fortune in hedge funds, is part of an elite group not only because of his billionaire status (No. 377 on the Forbes list), but because he is a seven-figure donor to two Republican super PACs.

He has given $1,050,000 to Restore Our Future, the outside group supporting Mitt Romney. And he has contributed $1 million to American Crossroads, the Karl Rove-backed super PAC.

He has also made donations to the Republican National Committees and other GOP groups. His wife, Anne, has also contributed to the Republicans, including $30,800 in September to the RNC.

Griffin has said he stepped up his political activities because of the response to the 2008 financial meltdown.

Government, he told the Chicago Tribune, “is way too involved in financial markets these days.”
