The connected world of cartoons

Seth MacFarlane has scored yet another hit with his first movie, “Ted,” starring a foul-mouthed, drug-using teddy bear who happens to have MacFarlane’s voice.

The move by the creator of “Family Guy” from TV animation to film is an evolution echoing that of “The Flintstones,” which was inspired by a TV show (”The Honeymooners”) and later spawned a movie.

Indeed, MacFarlane, who says he was personally inspired by “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, had agreed to do a Flintstones remake.

“It’s like being handed the keys to a very classic car,” he told the New Yorker.

However, MacFarlane later shelved the project, in part because Fred Flintstone and Family Guy patriarch Peter Griffin are too much alike.

“In a world where there are so many animated fathers on television who can trace their cartoon lineage directly back to Fred Flintstone, where does Fred Flintstone fit in himself?” he asked Bill Maher.
