Romney investments overlap with 2012 campaign

Although he has been less than forthcoming about his financial investments, Mitt Romney has released enough information to raise questions.

See, for example, Nicholas Shaxson’s examination of Romney’s offshore investments, in the current Vanity Fair.

Shaxson notes that Romney and his wife, Ann, invested in Elliott Associates, a Cayman Island-based hedge fund started by billionaire Paul Singer.

Singer also happens to be a big contributor to Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting Romney’s candidacy.

Although Romney’s investments are in a blind trust managed by attorney R. Bradford Malt of Ropes & Gray, this is hardly the sole overlap between the candidate’s investments and his political life.

As the Muckety map above shows, the Romneys are also investors in Solamere Capital, where son Tagg is a managing partner and son Scott is a senior adviser.

Three other people with ties to the company are donors to Restore Our Future. Spencer Zwick, managing partner of Solamere, is national finance chairman of the current Romney campaign, a position he also held in 2008.

See our earlier story on Solamere.
