Is Soros jumping back in the political game?

Billionaire George Soros is making his first big (public) donation of the current election.

Soros will give $1 million to American Bridge 21st Century, a super PAC that provides opposition research for the Democrats.

American Bridge reported last month that it had raised about $2 million in the first quarter.

Soros also has pledged $1 million to America Votes, an advocacy group that works with other organizations to increase the political influence of the left.

The last real splash by Soros was in 2004, when he poured $27.5 million into efforts to defeat President George W. Bush.

Last year, he gave $175,000 to Democratic PACs, and he has given to individual campaigns where the per-election ceiling is $2,500.

But the announcement of the American Bridge donation has to warm the hearts of Democrats hoping for more to come.

The New York Times quoted a spokesman as saying that Soros was concerned that the Citizens United decision “opened the floodgates to special interests’ paying for political ads.”

Soros has not made a donation to Priorities USA Action, the super PAC supporting President Obama. He did contribute to the Obama campaign in 2008.
