Many links join Club for Growth and Media Research Center

Two prominent conservative organizations - one focused on politics and the other on media - have significant overlap, as the Muckety map below shows.

The Club for Growth, which advocates for limited government and a free-market economy, is so powerful that many members of Congress are afraid to even discuss it, The New York Times writes.

It has helped to drive out Sens. Robert Bennett of Utah and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, while boosting the prospects of Marco Rubio and Mark Lee.

The Media Research Center, founded in 1987, is dedicated to “fighting liberal bias.” It runs its own news operation, called CNSNews, as well as a news analysis division, which monitors print and broadcast news.

Like the Club for Growth, its objectives include advancing free enterprise. Its Business & Media Institute monitors business coverage and calls media to task for what it considers biased reports.

As the map illustrates, many trustees of the Media Research Center are also contributors to the Club for Growth super PAC.

Two of the trustees serve on the Club for Growth’s leadership council, as does the center’s president, L. Brent Bozell III. Another trustee, Jerry Hayden, is a director of the Club for Growth.

(We should note that the Media Research Center has a large board. Its 2010 annual report listed 252 individuals or couples as trustees.)

The Club for Growth does not have the bankroll of other super PACs, reporting contributions last year of just under $2 million. Indications are, however, that it is ramping up for the current election year. Its PAC collected nearly $1.5 million last month.

The Media Research Center has a larger budget. In its 2010 tax returns, the organization reported revenues of $12.6 million.

Funders of the center have included the Edgar and Elsa Prince Foundation, Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation and Sarah Scaife Foundation.
