Now that World Bank President Robert Zoellick is not seeking a second term, Lael Brainard is thrust into yet another position of influence.

Brainard, under secretary of Treasury for international affairs, is heading the search committee for Zoellick’s successor.

Hers is also one of the names being bandied about as Zoellick’s successor. Others include former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Brainard, who was deputy national economic adviser to Bill Clinton, is one of the more connected people in the Obama administration.

She is a longtime adviser to Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner.

Her husband, Kurt Campbell, is assistant secretary of State. He also served as deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Asia.

Last month, The New York Times described Brainard, a former vice president of the Brookings Institution, as “America’s top financial diplomat,” known for her composure and grasp of detail.
