Daniel Yergin argues for the Iron Lady

Much as some internet commentators might try, it’s not easy to assail the views of Daniel Yergin.

He has credibility is so many camps.

Yergin is a multimillionaire, building his fortune by advising the energy industry. A Pulitzer Prize-winner for his book, “The Prize: the Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power,” he is also a think tanker, with board positions at the Brookings Institution and the New America Foundation.

He supports Democratic candidates and contributed $50,000 to Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration. He sits on the board advising Obama’s Energy secretary, Steven Chu.

Yet in a recent op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal, he defends Margaret Thatcher. (We recommend it, even if you haven’t seen “The Iron Lady.”)

Yergin, who has interviewed the former prime minister, argues that the movie starring Meryl Streep opts for drama at the sacrifice of history.

What the UK learned during the Thatcher years, he argues, was that governments cannot permanently live beyond their means: “That is the real story of the Iron Lady. And that is the story in Europe - and the U.S. - today.”
