Perry drops out

Rick Perry dropped out of the presidential race Thursday, throwing his support to Newt Gingrich.

At a press conference in Charleston, where he announced his candidacy in August, Perry said, “I have come to the conclusion that there is no viable path forward for me in this 2012 campaign.”

He said his objective is “not only to defeat President Obama, but to replace him with a conservative leader who will bring about real change.”

Perry’s run has never lived up to expectations. Poor performance at debates, including the infamous “oops” moment, has plagued him.

Despite spending millions of dollars in Iowa, he finished fifth in the caucuses. He skipped the New Hampshire primary and polls show him trailing the leading candidates in the upcoming South Carolina primary.
