Carl Forti, writes Mother Jones, is “Mitt Romney’s $12 Million Mystery Man.

Forti is a co-founder of Restore our Future, the super PAC that torpedoed Newt Gingrich in Iowa while promoting Romney’s bid for the GOP nomination.

Founder of a communications firm called Black Rock Group, he is also political director of American Crossroads and advocacy director of Crossroads GPS, groups conceived by Karl Rove.

All of these organization, of course, are supposed to independent of the Romney campaign.

However, Forti was political director for Romney’s 2008 run. Another co-founder of Restore our Future, Charles Spies, is former chief counsel to Romney. A third, Larry McCarthy, was a member of Romney’s 2008 media team.

During a Republican debate in New Hampshire Sunday, Romney responded to criticism of the group’s attack ads.

“I haven’t seen them and as you know under the law, I can’t direct their ads,” he said. Then he went on to provide a detailed defense of the ads’ content.
