The Kennedy political dynasty may be close to resurrection.

Joseph P. Kennedy III, grandson of Robert Kennedy, is considering a run for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Barney Frank.

Kennedy declared his plans Thursday morning, resigning his post as a Middlesex prosecutor.

“I am announcing today my intention to explore a candidacy for the United States Congress in the Fourth District of Massachusetts,” he said in a statement. “My decision to look seriously at elected office is grounded in a deep commitment to public service and my experience — both my own and that of my family — in finding just, practical, and bipartisan solutions to difficult challenges.”

Kennedy is the son of Joseph P. Kennedy II, a Massachusetts congressman from 1987 to 1999.

The Kennedy family’s ongoing presence in Washington ended in 2011, after 63 years, with the decision by Patrick J. Kennedy not to seek re-election as a representative from Rhode Island. His father, Sen. Edward J. Kennedy, died in 2009, while serving as the senior senator from Massachusetts.

Ted Kennedy’s brother, the late President John F. Kennedy, was a congressman and senator before being elected president in 1960. He was assassinated in 1963.

Another brother, Robert F. Kennedy, served as U.S. attorney general and senator from New York. He was assassinated in 1968, while campaigning for president.
