It might be said that there’s only one certainty in a billionaire’s life. He may avoid taxes, but he can’t dodge death.

The ability to afford better health care provides no guarantee of a long life.

Never was this more apparent in 2011 than with the premature death of Steve Jobs at age 56 from pancreatic cancer.

U.S. billionaires and near-billionaires who died this year included:

Name Age Cause
William A. Cook 80 congestive heart failure
Theodore J. Forstmann 71 brain cancer
F. Warren Hellman 77 leukemia
Steve Jobs 56 pancreatic cancer
Frederik Meijer 91 stroke
Joseph E. Robert Jr. 59 brain cancer
Donald J. Tyson 80 cancer
Charles J. Wyly Jr. 77 car accident

The average age of death of this small group was 73.9, slightly less than the life expectancy of 75.7 for all American males.
