Another happy day for Demi Moore?

By Laurie Bennett

November 20, 2011 at 8:51am

With her announced split from third husband Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore could be on her way to becoming a Hollywood super spouse.

(Our Muckety map below features some of the couple’s most aptly titled work, if not their best performances.)

For now, the rumors of new entanglements point to Kutcher. But like co-star Ellen Barkin in her latest film, “Another Happy Day,” Moore has many good years ahead of her.

If there were an Oscar in matrimony, it would go to the late Elizabeth Taylor, who was married eight times, twice to actor Richard Burton. Her long list of husbands included six big names - not only Burton, but Conrad Hilton Jr., Michael Wilding, Mike Todd, Eddie Fisher and Sen. John Warner.

Her last husband, construction worker Larry Fortensky, became famous only by wedding the superstar. By then, Taylor occupied the lofty position of Hollywood icon. Even marriage to a lowly laborer 20 years her junior couldn’t diminish her stature.

By sheer numbers, Zsa Zsa Gabor, with nine marriages, would hold the title of No. 1 super spouse. Although one husband them was the very wealthy Conrad Nicholson Hilton and another was the designer of the Barbie doll, Gabor was known more for her dating prowess (Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra) than power nuptials.

Fame, wealth and beauty all contribute to the making of a Hollywood super spouse, but longevity also helps. Gabor is 94. Taylor lived to 79, despite some raucous years.

Other Hollywood super spouses:

  • Lana Turner - an eight-timer, including an annulment and remarriage to restaurateur Joseph Crane. Turner’s first marriage, to big band leader Artie Shaw, lasted just four months. Her last was to a hypnotist.
  • Dennis Hopper

  • Tony Curtis had six wives, beginning with actress Janet Leigh and ending with horse trainer Jill VandenBerg.
  • Cary Grant married five times. Power wives included “poor little rich girl” Barbara Hutton and actress Dyan Cannon, who would later become known for her alluring wattle.
  • Dennis Hopper also had five wives. His first, actress Brooke Hayward, should almost count double. Hayward is the daughter of producer and talent agent Leland Hayward, one of the most connected men in Hollywood. He was also a serial husband whose spouses included actress Margaret Sullavan and Pamela Harriman.

Not surprisingly, our list is dominated by deceased actors of another age. This isn’t simply the mathematics of more years = more nuptials.

As Barkin, Jolie and Pitt can attest, marriage just isn’t the prerequisite it used to be.

However, Kutcher tweeted (or maybe his handlers tweeted) that he would “forever cherish the time I spent with Demi.

“Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world,” he wrote, “and unfortunately sometimes they fail.”
