Typically, when a big college donor offers opinions about campus politics, it’s cast as unwanted interference by a fat cat.

But Lewis Katz’s comments about the athletics program at Penn State should be heard.

Katz, a former owner of the New Jersey Nets who gave $15 million to the university, says that the officials who have stepped downin the wake of the sexual assault scandals are “taking a fall” for the sports program and Joe Paterno.

Athletic Director Timothy Curley has requested a leave and VP Gary Schultz has resigned, while the much-loved Paterno has issued a statement saying, “We were all fooled.”

At the center of the scandal is former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who is accused of sexual assaults or advances on eight boys between 1994 and 2009. Curley and Schultz reportedly learned of an assault in 2002. But so did Paterno, who’s still on the job.

“Curley works for Paterno, not the reverse,” Katz told Bloomberg.
