Romney and Marriotts have a long history

By Laurie Bennett

Although none of the Republican presidential candidates has released the names of bundlers, it’s clear that the Marriotts are in Mitt Romney’s camp.

Marriott International Chief Bill Marriott and his brother Richard have given $500,000 each to Restore our Future, the super PAC supporting Romney. Last month, they hosted a fundraiser for Romney at the Marriott Hotel in Bethesda.

Before launching his presidential bid, Romney held a seat on the hotel chain’s board of directors.

Both Marriotts are listed on the Forbes list of richest people in America - Richard at No. 312, worth $1.4 billion, and Bill at No. 331, worth $1.3 billion.

Both have been a loyal contributors to the GOP; Bill Marriott served as a fundraiser in John McCain’s 2008 campaign.

The men’s fathers were such good friends that George Romney named Mitt after J. Willard Marriott. Although he goes by “Mitt,” Romney’s first name is Willard.

Yet the Romney-Marriott relationship hasn’t always been easy.

During an earlier stint on the company board, anti-porn groups criticized Romney’s affiliation with a company that offered hard core in its hotel rooms. Marriott announced earlier this year that it was removing adult films from the menu at new hotels and was moving to a no-porn policy throughout its system.
