High-powered Florida household works toward a different outcome this time

One of the more interesting names on the Obama bundler list: Allison Tant of Tallahasee, FL, who has raised at least $50,000 for the president’s re-election bid.

Tant, a former lobbyist with Holland & Knight, is married to attorney Barry Richard, who represented George W. Bush in the legal battle for the outcome of the 2000 presidential race.

Richard and Tant hosted a fundraiser for Obama at their home in August.

Is their support a crisis of conscience for helping to launch a two-term Republican administration?

Not likely.

Richard told the Washington Post in 2000 that he took Bush’s case because the Republicans called first.

Richard is a Democrat who served in the Florida House of Representatives and has represented clients of both major parties over the years.

His father, Melvin Richard, was a judge and city councilman in Miami Beach, where he took a lonely stand against the local gambling syndicate.

The elder Richard served one term as mayor before being unseated in 1965 by Elliott Roosevelt, son of FDR.
