“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” the board said in a prepared statement.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

The company has created a web site in his memory.

Jobs resigned as chief executive in August.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” he wrote in his resignation letter then. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Jobs received a liver transplant in 2009, five years after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

In his commmencement address to Stanford students in 2005, Jobs told graduates:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
