The terrorist released in 2009 because he was reportedly on his deathbed is now reportedly on his deathbed.

Scottish officials are supporting a decision by Libyan rebels against extraditing Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the only person convicted in the 1988 bombing of a Pan-Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Megrahi was released from prison in August 2009 and permitted to return to his family in Tripoli. Authorities said then his life expectancy was three months.

The Scottish government released a statement Monday saying it had been in contact with Megrahi’s family.

“There was no evidence of a breach of his license conditions, and his medical condition is consistent with someone suffering from terminal prostate cancer,” the statement said.

Abdel-Nasser al-Megrahi told reporters that his brother was in a coma, waking occasionally.

“It is natural for him to be with his family and his mother,” he said. “Anyone, either Libyan or Scottish, would have mercy.”

Scotland’s release of Megrahi enraged the families of those who died in 1988. Of the 270 people killed in the bombing, 190 were Americans.

Four U.S. senators last year called for an investigation into whether BP played a role in the release, in order to secure drilling contracts off the Libyan coast.
