Blackstone’s Tony James rewards himself with new digs

The first sign that Blackstone Group is doing well came not with its stellar profit report this week, but with news of the latest real estate purchase by Hamilton “Tony” James.

The New York Observer reported on Tuesday that James, president of Blackstone, paid $24.9 million to buy Hal Prince’s duplex at 834 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan.

Residents of the exclusive building value their privacy, which may prove difficult in coming months, as one of the co-op owners is the media-besieged media titan Rupert Murdoch.

James isn’t the Blackstone exec with the highest-valued home. That title goes to CEO Steve Schwarzman, who lives at the city’s most prestigious address - 740 Park Avenue. The Observer estimates that Schwarzman’s triplex is worth at least $50 million.
