Donald Sussman’s romance with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has been good news for Democratic causes.
Sussman, a hedge funder who founded Paloma Funds and has backed other funds, married Pingree last month at her home in Maine. The two reportedly met on Vinalhaven Island in 2007.
Sussman has supported the Democrats for years, but his level of giving has risen notably. FEC filings show that in the past year and a half, he has contributed more than $1.1 million to federal committees.
Most of that went to two PACs that support abortion rights - Planned Parenthood Votes and Women Vote!, a super PAC organized by Emily’s List. He gave $30,400 last year to the Democratic National Committee.
Sussman is also a big donor to state committees in Maine, having contributed more than $3.7 million over the past decade. His wife’s leadership fund was among the recipients, as were the Maine Democratic State Committee and EqualityMaine PAC, which advocates for gay and lesbian rights.
