Cyrus Vance feels blowback from DSK case

The Manhattan district attorney has a famous name, though not nearly as famous as that of his predecessor or his highest-profile defendant.

Not surprisingly, Cyrus Vance Jr., son of the former secretary of state, is taking heat for the disintegrating case against former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The New York Times today describes sagging morale and worsening relations with both the police department and the former DA, Robert M. Morgenthau, who had supported Vance in the 2009 election.

Several people interviewed by the Times suggested that the new regime was far too concerned with publicity. That focus is backfiring now.

Strauss-Kahn was freed from house arrest Friday, after prosecutors revealed that the hotel maid who had accused him of sexual assault had lied to authorities and to grand jurors.
