Matthew Barzun uses internet experience to build Obama money web

It speaks (digital) volumes that Matthew Barzun, whose background is in web networking, is the national finance chairman of the Obama 2012 campaign.

In addition to the traditional glad-handing of big-money donors, much of the fundraising effort in the president’s re-election bid will take place online.

Barzun, 40, was a bundler and member of Obama’s national finance committee in 2008, when he designed the small-contributor network that attracted many supporters and much media attention.

After a short stint as U.S. ambassador to Sweden, he is now back in the U.S., setting up systems designed to attract donors to what could be the first $1 billion presidential campaign.

He tells Politico that the campaign is reactivating the networks of 2008, which included Generation Obama and the DNC TrailBlazers. The program is now called Gen44.

Before joining the Obama camp, Barzun was president of Brickpath LLC, where he oversaw Web media investments. He previously had been an executive vice president at CNET.
