Brian Mulroney’s U.S. business connections

By Laurie Bennett

Yesterday we wrote about the high-paying corporate board posts that Gordon D. Giffin has accepted in Canada since ending his term as U.S. ambassador there.

So it’s only fair that we also mention the American business involvements of former Canada Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

Like many aging Canadians, Mulroney, who was prime minister from 1984 to 1993, now spends much of his time in Florida. At 72, he’s still much sought after by companies doing business in both countries.

In the U.S., he’s a director of Blackstone Group, the New York financial firm, and Wyndham Worldwide, the New Jersey-based hotel company. He previously held board seats with Archer-Daniels-Midland and Cendant.

Mulroney holds positions on the boards of Canada-based Barrick Gold Corporation and Quebecor. He’s also a director of Independent News & Media, which owns publications in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and South Africa.

Independent News isn’t Mulroney’s only media connection. His daughter Caroline is married to Andrew Lapham, son of Harper’s national correspondent, Lewis H. Lapham. His son Ben is a former host of Canadian Idol.
