The perks of being Martha Stewart - or one of her relatives

By Laurie Bennett

A recent post by Footnoted prompted us to look at the latest proxy statement from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia - always an entertaining document.

Although Martha Stewart is still prevented from running the company - her five-year ban expires this summer, she and those close to her benefit from all sorts of company arrangements.

Her daughter Alexis, along with Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, daughter of Omnimedia chairman Charles Koppelman, co-host company TV and radio shows. Their pay last year totaled nearly $408,000 for Alexis Stewart and more than $350,000 for Hutt.

Margaret Christiansen, Martha Stewart’s sister-in-law, is a senior vice president of the company. Her salary in 2010 was almost $199,000.

Stewart’s title, for now, is “founder.” Before her run-in with federal prosecutors and subsequent prison stay, she was chair and CEO.

She continues to receive compensation in several ways. Her pay package last year totalled $5.9 million - down significantly from $9.8 million in 2009 because she did not receive a bonus. However, “other compensation” made up more than half of the package.

Stewart receives $2 million annually for use of her properties in filming the TV show. Other company-paid expenses in 2010 included $119,039 for security services, $55,725 for a weekend driver and $29,538 for a personal fitness trainer.
