Fortune 1000 boards: an incestuous group

How much crossover is there among America’s top corporate boards?

A search of the Muckety database shows six people who each sit on five boards. Reduce the number to four simultaneous board positions, and the list grows to 55 people. Drop it one more notch, to three or more board seats, and the group balloons to 258 directors.

Those wearing five hats:

The Muckety map above shows interconnections among three people with four or more seats: Korologos, Lyles and Roger B. Porter.

Porter held five board seats until one of the Fortune 1000 companies, Pactiv, was acquired in 2010.

It’s probably not coincidence that these three directors have also held high government posts.

Porter was George H.W. Bush’s assistant for economic and domestic policy, Korologos was labor secretary under Ronald Reagan and Lyles is a retired Air Force general.

We’ve previously noted the many board responsibilities of another name on our list - Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A former chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Jackson last was the highest-paid corporate board member in the country between 2008 to 2010. Until last year, she held a sixth Fortune 1000 director post, at NYSE Euronext.
