William Daley may be headed back to Washington

President Obama is reportedly considering another Chicago power player, William M. Daley, for a top administration job, possibly White House chief of staff.

Few people - Chicagoans or otherwise - are as well connected in the worlds of politics and business.

Daley is the son of the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, and brother of the current mayor, Richard M. Daley, who is not seeking re-election. He chaired Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign.

Former Commerce secretary under Bill Clinton, he sits on the boards of Fortune 1000 companies such as Boeing and Abbott Laboratories and is Midwest chairman for JPMorgan Chase.

Although he did not move to Washington with many other Chicagoans at the beginning of the Obama White House, he has played roles in the administration. He co-chaired Obama’s inaugural committee, and served as an advisory board member on the transition team.

Daley has been a voice of moderation, warning the Democratic Party against veering too far left.

In a December 2009 op ed published by the Washington Post, he wrote, “Either we plot a more moderate, centrist course or risk electoral disaster not just in the upcoming midterms but in many elections to come.”
