Muckety mover - The secret of politics? Timing

This headline ran in Tuesday’s Detroit Free Press: “Steven Rattner defends the timing of GM’s IPO.”

Two days later, New York readers might expect to see a revised version: “Andrew Cuomo defends the timing of suits against Rattner”

It can hardly be coincidence that Cuomo’s suits against President Obama’s former auto czar are announced on the day of the General Motors’ public offering.

One would almost think that Cuomo was a Republican, rather than a lifelong Democrat. Is this some sort of reverse politicking, to prove that the state’s chief prosecutor is above politics? That would seem silly, with Cuomo about to move into the governor’s mansion.

Clearly, the new charges, and his agreement to settle SEC complaints, undermine efforts by Rattner to regain credibility. He has a new book on the auto bailout and has been in the media spotlight in recent days because of the approaching IPO.

“Picking the day of the GM IPO after about 500 possible days further demonstrates that the attorney puts politics and maximizing his own media coverage ahead of the public interest,” Rattner’s spokesman told The New York Times.
