Rove-backed groups bring in millions

By Laurie Bennett

Two conservative groups steered by Karl Rove are attracting millions of dollars in donations from businesses and wealthy individuals.

One, American Crossroads, has to file details about its donors and expenditures. A related organization, Crossroads GPS, is able to avoid reporting requirements because it is a nonprofit issue group.

The groups are able to collect unlimited amounts from individuals and corporations as a result of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision in January.

Among the deep-pocketed donors: Texas oil man Trevor Rees-Jones and Jerrold Perenchio, a bundler for the McCain presidential campaign. Southwest Louisiana Land, a business contributing $1 million, is partly owned by Harold Simmons, a major donor to the Swift Boat effort against John Kerry.

Bloomberg reports that the two groups plan to spend $52 million to defeat Democratic candidates, with most of their attention focused on Senate races.

According to the National Journal, American Crossroad is spending $1.9 million on ads in four key states: Missouri, New Hampshire, Colorado and Nevada.

On its web site, American Crossroad lists its priorities as “individual liberty, limited government, free enterprise and a strong national defense.”

Its president, Steven Law, is former general counsel to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
