New possibilities open for Rahm Emanuel

Will he or won’t he?

With Richard M. Daley’s announcement Tuesday that he won’t seek another term as Chicago governor, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel is considered more likely than ever to move back to his home town.

“I’d be shocked if he didn’t run,” an unnamed White House official told the Washington Post.

At Intrade, the site that hosts bets on politics and other news, the cost of a share called “Will Rahm Emanuel depart as chief of staff before end of first term?” has been rising pretty steadily since mid-May. It reached an all-time high yesterday.

Emanuel told Charlie Rose in April that the mayoral seat has been a long-time aspiration.

“I hope Mayor Daley seeks reelection. I will work and support him if he seeks reelection,” he said then. “But if Mayor Daley doesn’t, one day I would like to run for mayor of the city of Chicago.”

As Politico notes, the election is just six months away. Emanuel has plenty of unfinished business in the White House.

Ysterday he issued a press release praising Daley, but he remained mum about his own intentions.

“While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision to not run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago,” he said.

Emanuel has until Nov. 22 to file nomination documents with the Chicago election board.
