Effort to stop CA global warming law draws big donors

By Laurie Bennett

September 5, 2010 at 1:48pm

Once again, a California ballot proposition is attracting millions of dollars from around the country.

This time it’s Prop 23, which would suspend the state’s global-warming law.

The Muckety map above shows supporters of the proposition in the top portion of the map, and opponents in the bottom portion.

Major opponents include California environmental groups and wealthy backers of such causes, including venture capitalist L. John Doerr; Wendy Schmidt, wife of Google chief Eric Schmidt; and Nancy Packard Burnett, daughter of Hewlett-Packard founder David Packard.

More recently, energy corporations from around the country have been pouring millions into the campaign for Prop 23’s passage.

Among these supporters are seven-figure donors Tesoro Petroleum, Occidental Petroleum and Valero Energy.

The Koch brothers, through a subsidiary of Koch Industries, also put $1 million this month into the campaign to pass the measure.

Prop 23 would suspend California’s 2006 climate change law, which aims to cut greenhouse gases to 1990 levels. The suspension would remain in effect until unemployment rates drop to 5.5 percent or below and stay there for four consecutive quarters.

Because it’s tied to joblessness, the proposition is likely to draw wide support in California. In July, the state’s unemployment rate was 12.3 percent - the third highest in the country, after Nevada and Michigan.

“A consortium of national scientific academies has scolded the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for down-playing uncertainties about global warming, failing to point out when its claims of catastrophe were based on weak evidence and misrepresenting some findings as peer-reviewed by scientists, when they weren’t.
The findings of the InterAcademy Council investigation also criticized IPCC management, recommending the organization adopt a conflict-of-interest policy. IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri has advised energy and financial companies potentially affected by policies stemming from IPCC findings. He says proceeds go to an energy think tank he heads and to charity.
The criticisms outlined this week by Princeton University professor Harold Shapiro, who chaired the investigation, essentially told the IPCC to stop lobbying governments to combat global warming and restrict its role to explaining science.
We have voiced similar complaints for years with IPCC reports, the fifth of which is due in 2014. Each successive report ratcheted up catastrophic predictions even as temperatures stopped increasing, despite soaring greenhouse gas emissions that the IPCC claims overheat the planet.”

If the media had covered climate change and the IPCC as well as they covered Toyota…..
The media should have done a better job concerning the validity of climate change instead of passing it on blindly as just news. They had a duty somewhere over the last 24 years of impending doom warnings from this CO2 mistake, to dig for the real truth like real journalists. Now we the media consumers use the same tools as the media, Google. This sewer of untreated information called the Internet was our own tool for finding truth. Our view of the world thanks to the Net, now clearly shows how fallible scientists are and how corrupt they are along with their complicit politicians promising to make the weather better with taxes on CO2. Tax the air. Tax a volcano. This modern day witch burning is for the history books to laugh at, as we laugh at Romans looking for Omens sheep entrails.
Now climate change is like the CFL, the media is all over it but nobody cares. The voters have the consensus that counts and voters are not voting YES to taxes and sacrifices of lifestyle to SAVE THE PLANET so get ahead of the curve you lazy copy and paste artists in the fading media.

The California Jobs Initiative (CJI) is an oil corporation farce and fraud. There is no connection, whatsoever, between greenhouse gas emission reduction and the loss of jobs . This notion is an insult to the intelligence of the people of California. In fact, there is job growth in the clean, renewable energy industry. Chevron employs 65,000 worldwide and CJI is not going to change this. The only jobs created by the oil industry are clean-up jobs after oil spills and deep water, blow outs and pump-handler jobs. CJI will make fantastic profits for the oil industry, increase air pollution, especially in communities around their refineries, and there will not be lower gas prices. Both Valero and Tesoro are super Enrons. Since when did the oil companies start to show any concern for the unemployed and their families?

Facts: Nitrogen constitutes 78% of the atmosphere, oxygen 21% and trace gases just 1%. Water vapor is the most significant trace gas and the most significant green house gas (GHG). According to IPCC technical reports carbon dioxide is the least significant trace gas both by volume and by Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Question: What are the chances an infinitesimal (.04%) trace gas (CO2), essential to photosynthesis and therefore life on this planet, is responsible for runaway Global Warming?

    Answer: Infinitesimal

Discussion: The IPCC now agrees. See the IPCC Technical Report section entitled Global Warming Potential (GWP). And the GWP for CO2? Just 1, (one), unity, the lowest of all green house gases (GHG). What’s more, trace gases which include GHG constitute less than 1% of the atmosphere. Of that 1%, water vapor, the most powerful GHG, makes ups 40% of the total. Carbon dioxide is 1/10th of that amount, an insignificant .04%. If carbon dioxide levels were cut in half to 200PPM, all plant growth would stop according to agricultural scientists. It’s no accident that commercial green house owner/operators invest heavily in CO2 generators to increase production, revenues and profits. Prof. Michael Mann’s Bristle cone tree proxy data (Hockey stick) proves nothing has done more to GREEN (verb) the planet over the past few decades than moderate sun-driven warming (see solar inertial motion) together with elevated levels of CO2, regardless of the source. None of these facts have been reported in the national media. Why?

Fake science in #4. Elevated ppm of carbon dioxide in the upper atmosphere does in fact physically act as a greenhouse gas in trace amounts. Water vapor traps heat but it cycles out of the atmosphere in days, whereas excess CO2 stays in the upper atmosphere for a hundred years. When methane a worse greenhouse gas is released from the oceans and melting tundras and ice due to the CO2-which will occur at an increase in global temperatures of around 2 degrees centigrade. there will be a runaway effect which can’t be stopped. You can’t escape physics. And yes planets can even be destroyed by that. That’s why the temperature at the surface of Venus is 800 degrees, hot enough to melt lead, more than Mercury which is closer to the sun.
