BP hires politically connected PR firms

By Laurie Bennett

Along with its lobbying muscle, BP has beefed up its PR machine in recent weeks.

The British company has brought in firms with broad U.S. political connections and campaign experience.

Hilary Rosen, a managing partner in Brunswick Group’s Washington office, is working as a consultant for BP. Rosen is former CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America and, until recently, was an editor-at-large for Huffington Post. The web site let her go when she took the BP job.

A former Brunswick director, Anne Womack Kolton, is overseeing group media for BP. Kolton, a vice president at APCO Worldwide, was press secretary to Dick Cheney during the 2004 campaign. She held public affairs jobs in the Bush White House, as well as the Energy and Treasury departments.

BP has also brought in Purple Strategies, a communications firm headed by former Bush strategist Alex Castellanos and Democratic media consultant Steve McMahon.

CNN reports that BP also has hired the Feehery Group, led by John Feehery, former spokesman for House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert.
