The fifth dimension of ‘Lost’

We finally have figured out one of the great mysteries of ABC’s Lost - and it was hidden in plain sight.

Island denizens live not only in alternate worlds and alternate time frames.

They exist on alternate networks!

During some recent veg time, we were guided by a natural law of cable television: No matter how many hours of Law and Order you’ve already seen, there are always more.

Two of the episodes we watched happened to feature actors from Lost - Michael Emerson and Fionnula Flanagan.

So we set to exploring, and we discovered that before and after their gigs on the island, many of the Lost have found roles as killers, judges and mourners on Law and Order.

aka John Locke
aka Smoke Monster

How did we not see this earlier?

Emerson, the bad but possibly redeemable Ben Linus on Lost, played a child abuser on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Flanagan, the spooky Eloise Hawking, mother and killer of Daniel Faraday on the island, was the mother of an escaped inmate on a 2003 episode of SVU.

Terry O’Quinn, better known as John Locke, more currently the Smoke Monster on Lost, appeared in a 2004 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, about the murder of a pharmaceutical rep.

Naveen Andrews, who as Sayid is virtually a dead man on Lost, recently has played Detective Ash Ramsey on SVU. Alan Dale, known to Losties as the scheming Charles Widmore, was a judge on SVU.

As all devotees know, things are rarely as they seem on Lost. So it’s possible that Law and Order is not the island’s fifth dimension. It may simply be that there are so many episodes of the crime series that every member of the Screen Actors Guild eventually gets a credit.

As Hugo pronounced in last night’s episode of Lost: “Dead people are more alive than live people.” And reruns live forever.

Our Muckety map shows major crossovers between the two shows. Here’s a list (almost certainly incomplete) of actors who’ve appeared on both programs:
