Broadway fans rejoice! The Great White Way has been breaking into prime-time TV by way of Glee, one of the year’s most popular new shows, airing on Fox.
The latest Broadway star to join the cast is Idina Menzel; famous for her Tony-award winning role of Elphaba in the original cast of Wicked. Menzel follows her Wicked co-star Kristin Chenoweth, who had a brief stint on Glee earlier this year and contributed two songs to the show’s soundtrack.
It was speculated that Menzel would guest-star as the coach of McKinley High’s rival glee club, Vocal Adrenaline, but Glee creator Ryan Murphy told People he wasn’t yet sure how he would cast the Broadway star.
Also joining the cast in the spring will be Jonathan Groff, who starred with Lea Michele in Spring Awakening. Groff and Michele could rekindle the spark they shared playing lovers on Broadway; ABC News reports Groff may be a love interest for Michele’s character, the diva Rachel Berry.
Guest stars aside, Glee’s resident cast members also have made their mark on Broadway.
In addition to Michele, Matthew Morrison, who plays glee club coach Will Shuster, starred in Broadway productions of Hairspray and South Pacific. Glee cast member Jenna Ushkowitz also appeared in Spring Awakening.
Glee wrapped up its fall lineup of new episodes last night, but will return in the spring.
