Hamilton Project likely to have a say on jobs initiative

President Obama is scheduled to meet tomorrow with CEOs, small business owners, economists and others with ideas about how to get jobless Americans back to work.

In addition to corporate chiefs such as Jeffrey Immelt and Eric Schmidt - members of a group that Politico has dubbed his corporate kitchen cabinet - he’s likely to draw on the expertise of a Democratic think tank.

Through its many connections to the Obama administration, the Hamilton Project, an economic research program at the Brookings Institution, is a major influence.

The project was launched in 2006, at a policy briefing featuring remarks by then-Sen. Obama and moderated by Peter Orszag, who was then a senior fellow at Brookings and is now Obama’s budget director. Another panelist at the session was Austan Goolsbee, then an economics professor at the University of Chicago and now the White House economic adviser.

Jason Furman, a former director of the project, is now deputy director of the National Economic Council.

The project’s advisory council includes venture capitalist John Doerr and and former Council of Economic Advisers chair Laura Tyson, who are members of the President’s Economic Recovery Board. Hedge funder Eric Mindich, a bundler for the Obama campaign, is also on the Hamilton board.
