Wealthy Republican fundraiser Mel Sembler has a new cause.
In an interview with Michael Isikoff of Newsweek, he acknowledged being a benefactor of Keep America Safe, a political advocacy group recently founded by Elizabeth Cheney.
“I love Liz Cheney and what she’s doing,” Sembler told Isikoff, saying he would be “as supportive as my budget will allow.”

Sembler’s budget is likely to be sizeable. The former ambassador to Italy made a fortune in Florida real estate, and helped raise millions for the Bush campaigns. He has served as finance chair for the Republican National Committee and Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential campaign.
He and Dick Cheney are trustees of the conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute. Sembler also chaired the legal defense fund for Scooter Libby - a cause close to Cheney’s heart.
Keep America Safe focuses on national security and a strong military, just as the former vice president did in his criticism this week of the Obama administration. The Keep America Safe web site was one of the first to publicize Cheney’s speech before the Center for Security Policy, in which he accused Obama of “dithering” in his decision about troop size in Afghanistan.
Keep America Safe plans a series of radio and web ads targeting Obama. The spots will run in home districts of Democratic members of Congress considered vulnerable in the 2010 elections.

Mel Sembler (offensive material deleted) … started one of the most abusive teen rehabs in the country for profit. Just Google Straight Inc. and Mel Sembler. He is a sick man and I will support nothing his greedy abusing ass pays for. Liz will surely lose support because of this. She’s lost mine.

I like Sembler and think he is a fine decent man. Because Liz chose him, I think I’ll look more into her efforts.
