News of actress Natasha Richardson’s hospitalization after a skiing accident on Monday at the Mont Tremblant ski resort sparked a frenzy of contradictory headlines across the web Tuesday afternoon.
The Associated Press reported at 1:30 that Richardson was at Hopital du Sacre-Coeur in Montreal in critical condition with a head injury.
A half hour earlier, Time Out New York incorrectly reported that the actress was dead.
By 2 p.m., the magazine retracted its original article, which had run under the the headline “RIP Natasha Richardson 1963–2009.” The retraction said that sources had told the magazine that Richardson was brain dead, adding “Sources close to the family indicate that they are treating it as a death.”
PerezHilton.com reported that after further inquiries to Time Out New York to verify Richardson’s condition, his contact at the magazine responded: “My apologies with the semantics issue.”
TMZ contradicted the Time Out New York correction, claiming that as of 2 p.m. Tuesday the hospital confirmed that Richardson was not brain dead, but was heavily sedated and suffering from brain swelling.
The actress fell on a beginner slope during a ski lesson, according to Mont Tremblant spokeswoman Catherine Lacasse. Lacasse confirmed to the Associated Press that Richardson was up walking and joking after her fall and was examined by the ski patrol, who found no evidence of bleeding.
An hour after her accident, Richardson experienced severe headaches and was taken to Sacre Coeur Hospital.
Richardson is married to actor Liam Neeson, who left the set of his next film “Chloe” to be with his wife. They have two sons, Micheal Richard Antonio, 13, and Daniel Jack, 12.
She is the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave.
