More than two years after the death of his girlfriend, Anna Nicole Smith, Howard K. Stern has been formally charged with conspiring to furnish drugs to the former Playboy star.
Smith died in February 2007 after an accidental overdose of a combination of prescription drugs.
Stern was Smith’s boyfriend and constant companion in the last years before her death, and was with her when she died.

Also charged with felonies on Thursday were two doctors, Sandeep Kapoor and Khristine Eroshevich, who are alleged to have unlawfully prescribed medications to Smith.
The three were also charged in Los Angeles Superior Court with “prescribing, administering or dispensing a controlled substance to an addict,” reports People. Prosecutors claim Stern, Kapoor, and Eroshevich provided Smith with thousands of pills from June 2004 to January 2007.
Stern and Kapoor were arrested and booked Thursday in Whittier, CA. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Eroshevich. Stern’s bail was set at $20,000.
Eroshevich had prescribed 11 different drugs to Smith during the course of her life. The prescriptions that were found in the hotel room where Smith was found unconscious just before her death were also authorized by Eroshevich, though they had been prescribed to Stern.
Stern claimed to have fathered Smith’s daughter Dannielynn and was listed on the birth certificate as her father. After Smith’s death, DNA tests proved that her former boyfriend, Larry Birkhead was Dannielynn’s biological father and he was given custody of the child.
Dannielynn is the heir to Smith’s estate, though the value of the estate remains unknown due to the unresolved legal battle with the family of Smith’s late husband, billionaire J. Howard Marshall.
