We’ve departed today from our tradition of drawing a Muckety map to accompany each story, choosing to instead show a Google map illustrating the geographic reach of the Bernard Madoff debacle.
The map below (which may take a moment to load) shows 1,173 American cities where victims of Madoff’s Ponzi scheme live. The locations were drawn from a list of 13,567 customer accounts, filed with federal bankruptcy court in New York.
We’ve plotted just one point per per city, all within the continental United States. (Claims have been filed from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Mexico and Kenya.)
Some cities are much more heavily represented than others. Not surprisingly, New York, where Madoff’s investment company was based, had the most claims, with more than 2,000 from Manhattan alone. Other communities with high numbers of customers victimized by Madoff include Fort Lee, Denver and Boca Raton.
Although most claims list the address of the investor, many list the investor’s accountant or agent, so these addresses also show up more often.
The list of victims, which was released Wednesday, quickly became popular reading on the web. The New York Times today presents it in searchable format.
As we noted yesterday, well-known names that hadn’t previously been public include former Dodgers great Sandy Koufax, actor John Malkovich and the estate of the late singer, John Denver. U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey is also one of the unfortunate investors.
Note: Emily Morgan also contributed to this story.

It’s weird, none of the investors had his/her address in Las Vegas.

Actually, Las Vegas does appear on the map. There were 19 claims filed from that city.

Odd how that map coincides so accurately with the concentration of jews in AIPAC’s favorite country.

Thanks, nice article! Below is a bunch of tricks that allowed Madoff to fool so many people, investors, auditors and regulators:
