We wrote yesterday about Tom Daschle’s connections to EduCap, a nonprofit that has been investigated for its spending.
Daschle, who has withdrawn his name from consideration as health and human services secretary, isn’t the only Obama nominee to have connections to the founder of EduCap, Catherine B. Reynolds.
Reynolds sits on the board of Zenith National Insurance with Leon Panetta, who has been nominated to head the CIA.
Zenith, a publicly traded company that specializes in workers’ compensation insurance, has a board that is an all-star cast of former government officials. In addition to Panetta, a former congressman and chief of staff during the Clinton administration, directors include:
- Former Nevada Gov. Robert J. Miller
- Former FBI Director William S. Sessions
- Max M. Kampelman, former arms control negotiator during the Reagan administration
- Fabian Nunez, former speaker of the California State Assembly
The board post paid Panetta more than $237,000 last year, including stock and fees.
Altogether, Panetta collected $790,000 last year from consulting fees and board positions, according to a review by Politico. He earned an additional $250,000 for speaking engagements.
Panetta is co-director of the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy, which he founded with his wife. He is also a director of Corinthian Colleges and Blue Shield of California.
The Senate Intelligence Committee is scheduled to review Panetta’s nomination tomorrow.
