Voters Twitter away about experiences at the polls

With record turnout this election day, the Twitter Vote Report is being flooded with input from voters reporting problems at the polls.

The web site, sponsored by Twitter, allows users to post comments or “tweets” in real time. Twitter users can post to the Twitter Vote Report by tagging their post with “#votereport.” Reports can also be sent in by cell phone or by calling an automated phone line.

The site is tracking the country’s longest waits at the polls. As of 2 p.m., Wyandanch, NY, had the highest average wait, with a report of a line lasting 240 minutes. By 3:30 p.m., Detroit, MI, was listed as having the longest line at 330 minutes.

Twitter Vote Report also tracks user comments on national and state maps.

Response to the project has been overwhelming, with the site going down intermittently throughout the day.

Voters have discussed their experiences with comments ranging from “Paper ballot scanner broken, folded ballot” to “just got word of ppl contesting *any* young and/or black voters in indianapolis, indiana.”

Twitter Vote Report was launched by Nancy Scola and Allison Fine, a senior editor at Personal Democracy Forum.

The project has partnered with organizations such as the League of Young Voters, Rock the Vote and Why Tuesday, to encourage voting and ensure voters receive fair treatment. Reports received by the project will be forwarded to the Election Protection Coalition.

Well, my experience at the polls was that one of those “new registrants” had registered using our address. My husband hopes that this housemate we didn’t even know we had will do the decent thing and pay rent.
