The Senate cast a bipartisan vote of 75-24 last night for the $700 billion bailout bill, with both presidential candidates, the majority leader and the minority leader urging support.
Opposition came from the conservative and liberal wings, with 24 senators voting against the measure. Some (as the Muckety map illustrates) hold seats on important banking and finance committees in the Senate.
The Washington Post reports today that Barack Obama played a small but important role in trying to convince Democrats to support the plan, by calling the holdouts.
The only endangered Democratic incumbent, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, voted no, as did two Republican senators facing tough re-election bids: Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina and Roger Wicker of Mississippi.
Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina gave a harsh speech from the floor, saying government was leading the nation “into the depths of socialism.”
The Senate vote is a possible harbinger of passage in the House, which may vote again on Friday, after defeating the plan on Monday.
