Man known as Clark Rockefeller pleads not guilty to kidnapping daughter

A German citizen who calls himself Clark Rockefeller has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter off a Boston street in July, in the latest chapter of a story involving aliases, international intrigue and a missing couple.

Investigators say Rockefeller is really Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, a humbly-born Bavarian who has been living under aliases since coming to the United States as a high-school exchange student in 1978. Police say he has no tie to the late John D. Rockefeller’s family.

Gerhartsreiter was arraigned Monday on charges of parental kidnapping, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon - a motor vehicle - and giving a false name to police. The judge set bail at $50 million.

Authorities also have identified Gerhartsreiter as a “person of interest” in the 1985 disappearance of a California couple.

The man known as Rockefeller was charged with kidnapping his daughter, Reigh Storrow Boss, during a supervised visitation July 27 in the Back Bay section of Boston. It was his first visit with her since an acriminous divorce late last year from his wife, Sandra Boss, a partner at McKinsey & Company, to whom he had been married for 12 years. The girl, who was unharmed, has returned to London where her mother lives.
