Hannah Montana is Nicholas Sparks’ latest muse.
Instead of writing a novel, adapting it to a screenplay, then casting the actors, Sparks is writing his next novel and screenplay simultaneously, with Miley Cyrus in the leading role.
Sparks told Variety, “This is similar to the way it’s gone with movies based on my novels; it’s just out of order.”
Cyrus cited Mandy Moore’s 2002 film A Walk to Remember as a model on which to base her film career and help her move from tween entertainment to more adult roles.
Moore, who entered the public eye as a 15-year-old pop star in 1999, established herself as leading actress after starring in A Walk to Remember, which was based on a Sparks novel. She has gone on to star in romantic comedies Because I Said So and License to Wed.
The deal between Sparks and Cyrus was brokered by United Talent Agency, which represents both the author and the actress.
As star of the TV megahit Hannah Montana, Cyrus is already a pop icon.
In an effort to keep her good-girl image on track as she edges into more mature roles, Cyrus will work with Disney producers Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gigbot, as well as her mother and manager Tish Cyrus, who has been named the executive producer of the film.
To further establish herself as a serious actress, Cyrus doesn’t plan to sing in the film.
Sparks has written several other novels that were hits on the big screen; including The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, and Nights in Rodanthe, which is set to open on Sept. 26.
He plans to release the yet-to-be-named novel next fall. He is currently working on the novel and the screenplay simultaneously.
Variety reports that Cyrus and her team were drawn to the themes of romance and family presented in the Sparks drama; but so far no other plot details have been revealed.
